Green Initiatives

Philadelphia Green’s commitment to the environment extends far beyond just parks and gardens. In recent years the Philadelphia Green staff has launched a variety of programs to tackle some of the city’s toughest challenges, including pollution to both the air and water.

Philadelphia Green addresses the concern for clean water through its partnership with the Philadelphia Water Department and its Office of Watersheds. Together they target the city’s major drainage areas to address combined sewer overflow.

Another initiative is embracing green roof technology. Green roofs offer big benefits to the environment. They absorb and retain large quantities of rainwater, reducing runoff that contributes to flooding. They filter pollution from rainfall and keep it from entering rivers and streams. Recently Philadelphia Green staff contributed to the design and installation of a green roof located at PECO headquarters in Center City.

In whole, Philadelphia Green is making the city more sustainable, so that future generations can enjoy all that the area has to offer. These projects promote a better understanding of natural resources and the importance of community involvement.
