Planned Giving
Leave a legacy to PHS through charitable
gifts and estate planning
A planned or deferred gift is one that is arranged
during one's lifetime, but the benefit to PHS is deferred to a future
date. Bequests, gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, charitable
lead trusts, and gifts of life insurance are ways to support PHS through planned giving.
Bequests
A bequest is a very simple way to provide a planned gift to PHS
and often allows donors to make significant contributions that may
not have been possible during their lifetimes.
To provide for PHS in your will, the following
wording is suggested:
I hereby give, devise, and bequeath to the
Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, a nonprofit corporation organized
and operating under the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania,
the sum of $_______ to be used for the Society's general purposes.
If you have an interest in establishing a fund
for a specific purpose, please contact the Development Office for
guidance.
Charitable Gift Annuities
A Charitable Gift Annuity is a fixed income plan, which pays you
and/or another beneficiary a guaranteed income for life. In exchange
for your gift of cash or securities, PHS will provide the beneficiary
with a guaranteed lifetime income, a portion of which is tax-free.
Gift annuity rates are determined by the age of the person or persons
who receive the income payments. A gift annuity requires a $10,000
minimum gift and a minimum age requirement of 60.
Charitable Remainder Trusts
Charitable Remainder Unitrusts (CRUT) and Charitable Remainder Annuity
Trusts (CRAT) are types of trusts that make payments to you or a
beneficiary for life or a term of years. At the expiration of the
trust, PHS receives the principal. A unitrust makes annual payments
based upon the changing value of the principal each year. Annuity
trust payments are fixed at the date of the gift.
Charitable Lead Trusts
A Charitable Lead Trust (CLT) is an irrevocable trust into which
the donor places an income-producing asset for a fixed period of
time during which income is paid to the Society. At the conclusion
of the trust term, the asset is returned to the donor or another
beneficiary specified by the donor.
Life Insurance Policies
You may designate PHS as the owner/beneficiary of a life insurance
policy you and your family may no longer require. You may transfer
actual ownership of the policy to PHS or purchase a new policy for
PHS's benefit.
Elizabeth S. Schaffer Society
The Elizabeth S. Schaffer Society honors those individuals who have
provided for the future of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society
by including PHS in their estate plans. Members of the Elizabeth
S. Schaffer Society are recognized in the Annual Report and will
receive invitations to attend special events.
